The Tossal Gros: a balcony to the Campo and to the Conca de Barberà

The Grossa Tossal, 867 meters high is the highest peak of the Sierra de Jordà. This mountain range, together with the Sierra Carbonària, form a narrow mountain range that separates two plains: the Campo de Tarragona, to the south, and the Conca de Barberà, to the north. The ascent to the Tozal or morrot of Sant Jordi allows you to enjoy magnificent views over the two plains that, on certain days of good visibility, will reach from the sea to the peaks of the Pyrenees.

Due to its vegetal landscape and fauna diversity, the Tossal Gros contains 177,71 hectares that have been declared a PEIN area – Natural Interest Area -, divided between the municipalities of Figuerola del Camp, the Alt Camp region, and Montblanc and Barberà de la Conca, in the Conca de Barberà.

The vegetal landscape is a sample of the typical communities of the coastal alzinar, although to the slopes that look to the north mediterranean species like the red pine or the holly are mixed.

In terms of fauna, bird species, both nesting and passing, stand out, given that the Jordà and Carbonària mountain ranges – due to the morphology and geographical location – are a point of passage for many gliding birds (Marcense eagle, milà, aguilote avispero, etc.) in the migratory routes that cross Catalonia.

You can bequeath to Tossal Gros from the itinerary «Un tomb pel Jordà»
